He died on 21 February 1927 at Craven County, North Carolina, at age 35 due to accidental drowning. The Sun Journal reported that a "funeral was held Monday (21 Feb) for W. Elbert Gaskins, 37, who lives in the Walker road section, whose body was found in a canal by the road. Gaskins left home Sunday and when he failed to return that night search was made for him with the result that his body was found in the canal.
     Coronor Hartsfield investigated the case and found an inquest unnecessary. His opinion was that death was due to drowning. There was no sign of foul play and no jury was empaneled."1,3 He was buried at High Bridge Cemetery, Caton, Craven County, North Carolina.
