The correspondent wrote a few days later, "There is more sickness in our community at this time than has been known for a long time. Mr. John Gaskins who has had typhoid fever, has been sick now for seventy days and cannot even turn himself in bed yet. His wife and children are now sick and it is thought one of the children will die. There is nobody left to wait on the sick."3 He and Penelope Elizabeth Toler were living on 4 May 1917? At Kinston, Lenoir County, North Carolina. John Riley Gaskins died on 13 August 1928 at Craven County, North Carolina, due to prostate cancer.1 He was buried on 14 August 1928 at High Bridge Cemetery, Caton, Craven County, North Carolina.

Elbert Gaskins, 37, who lives in the Walker road section, whose body was found in a canal by the road. Gaskins left home Sunday and when he failed to return that night search was made for him with the result that his body was found in the canal.
     Coronor Hartsfield investigated the case and found an inquest unnecessary. His opinion was that death was due to drowning. There was no sign of foul play and no jury was empaneled."1,3 He was buried at High Bridge Cemetery, Caton, Craven County, North Carolina.
